Oil seed rape
Rapeseed, also known as oilseed rape belong to the brassica family. A relative of mustard, kale, and cabbage, the rape plant is distinguishable by its yellow flowers. There is a common misconception that rapeseed and canola are the same. They may look the same but by looking at their chemical profiles, they become distinguishable. Industrial rapeseed contains at least 45 percent of erucic acid while canola has less than 2 percent erucic acid. (read more)
Rapeseed is commonly grown in the Pacific Northwest where the pH is between 5.5 and 8.3. At harvesting, the seeds are pressed to release cooking oil but the oil can also be used in lubricants and biofuels. The plant becomes animal feed for livestock after harvesting. Winter rape is sown in August and flowers in April and May. Every year, several million hectares of oil seed rape are planted primarily in Europe, China, India and North America. Around 1,500 liters of rapeseed oil can be produced from one hectare of oilseed rape.
